ORADELL, N.J.
APRIL 6, 2004
– Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit $6 million, with one small catch…he has to take his deceased uncle on a weeklong vacation to Monte Carlo. If not, the money literally goes to the dogs. What happens next is hilarious and pure lunacy as the Bergen County Players, one of America’s foremost theater groups, presents the musical murder-mystery farce, Lucky Stiff.

The show opens Saturday, May 1, and plays weekends through Saturday May 29 at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell.

“This show is a great way to end our 71st season,” said Steve Bell of OAKLAND, the show’s director. “It’s a zany blend of mystery, music, and mayhem with an extremely talented cast of singers and actors.”   Bell, currently serving a second term as BCP president, has directed and performed in numerous shows. He most recently appeared on the BCP stage as Moonface Martin in Anything Goes.

Lucky Stiff features Joe Riley of JERSEY CITY as Harry Witherspoon, a good-natured young Englishman working as an underpaid shoe salesman. His character’s life changes when his rich Uncle Anthony is murdered. Riley has appeared in many shows, including a leading role in BCP’s Epic Proportions.

Witherspoon encounters many people while on his adventure. There’s Annabel Glick, played by Nancy Feldman of NEW CITY, a sweet soprano and representative of the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn, the organization that stands to gain Witherspoon’s inheritance if he doesn’t follow through with his uncle’s instructions. Feldman recently graced the BCP stage in the musical 1776.

Another character is the hard-edged and nearsighted Rita La Porta, played by Alyson Cohn of WYCKOFF. Cohn, who has performed in many shows including Into the Woods, is also a longtime BCP director.

Larry Weiner of SADDLE BROOK has the role of Luigi Gaudi, a boisterous and gregarious Italian, a pivotal character. He also appeared in BCP’s 1776.

Alex Ishkanian of HACKENSACK portrays Vinnie Di Ruzzio, Rita LaPorta’s brother, who would never do anything out of the ordinary, risky or controversial. Ishkanian has performed in a number of shows including And the World Goes Round.

Heather Donnelly of TEANECK plays the knockout Dominique Du Monaco. A BCP newcomer, Donnelly has appeared on ABC’s All My Children.

The chorus features a wealth (no pun intended!) of talented performers, including Paul Aiello of SADDLE BROOK, Karen Asconi of BOGOTA, and Brian Feldman of NEW CITY (husband of Nancy Feldman, our Annabel Glick).

Based on the novel, “The Man Who Broke The Bank at Monte Carlo” by Michael Butterworth, Lucky Stiff was the first Ahrens and Flaherty work to be produced. It earned the 1988 Richard Rodgers Production Award.

Edith Oliver of The New Yorker said: “Best of all…is the music. The composer, Stephen Flaherty, and his songs, melodic and refreshing, are the real thing.”

Songs such as “Something Funny’s Going On” and “Good To Be Alive” entertain audiences. Flaherty and Ahrens have gone on to write the scores for such successful Broadway musicals such as Ragtime and Seussical, The Musical.

Not only does the BCP have an interesting past, so does the building in Oradell, NJ that they have called home for the past 59 years, the Little Firehouse Theatre.  As the current name suggests, the building was originally used as Oradell’s firehouse until a newer one was built in 1949.  In conjunction with its 70th anniversary, and in order to enhance BCP theatergoers’ overall experience, the BCP renovated the Little Firehouse Theatre’s lobby and lounge.
